In August 2013 I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, resulting in a complete thyroidectomy and the removal of lymph nodes. My laryngeal nerve was cut during surgery, resulting in vocal cord paralysis. Shortly after thyroidectomy, I received RAI treatment and surgery for a vocal cord implant.
I was told I had the ‘good cancer’. But, the months following surgery resulted in brain fog, muscle loss, change in metabolism, forgetfulness, shortness of breath, and a quality of life downgrade. The vocal cord paralysis resulted in obstruction of the air passage; gone are the days of high performing physical activity and my public speaking career.
Seeking relief from my so-called ‘good cancer’, doctors visits often resulted in a common response, to accept my ‘new normal’.
While visiting my local thyroid cancer support group, I found others facing similar challenges and seeking better answers.
Determined to find better better information, I sought better doctors; those willing to think outside the box and those who were up to date on the latest treatment trends and medical innovations. This mission has resulted in the Doctor Thyroid podcast; a a platform to share information from top doctors, and available to you with from the click of a button.
My hope is you get the information to help improve your quality of life, and help you find the best available treatment options.
Doctor Thyroid is a place to learn from patient stories, and to hear from leading thyroid-related experts.
